Stolen party essay

Over the week I have been applying close reading to my books. And as a result I learned about ways to further deepen my thinking as a reader. In the story “The Stolen Party,” I found the deeper meaning to the story in various techniques and writing strategies that were included in the text. Such as word choice, and character roles in the book besides, leading protagonist, supporting character, antagonist, and etc. As I read I look for more than what is writing of the pages and I have to think about the content of the book by not only reading.

                         

For example book the main character Rosaura is arguing with her mother over being allowed to go to her "friend" Luciana's birthday party. Rosaura believes that she is going as a guest and friend of Luciana, but thinks otherwise. In this part of the book Rosaura is more than the main character. She is also portrayed as the resistance against her own mother. She is resisting to listen to her mother's word about how is not suppose trust Luciana or any one like her. And her mother is not supporting character, she is the power being resisted. Considering that Rosaura's mother has more knowledge of the word than Rosaura, it would seem difficult to defy her.

Also in the book the author used his or her choice of word wisely show that it not only fits the story but the character's point view as well. Rosaura's mother speaks in tone with high aggression. She even said this to her own daughter, "The problem with you, young lady, is that you like to fart higher than your ass."  She can say things might be entirely accurate. She said in the book " It's a rich people party."  Even through the host of the party was said to be wealthy, the is not textually evidence stating that only the rich attended the party.

In conclusion I used reading techniques to analyze the text and discovering inner workings of the author. Close reading has shown that there is more to a book. It shown how there be something hidden within something as little as the words.

Did you ever read book that you truly enjoyed reading, so much it became the best books you’ve come to read. Throughout the year of 2013, I have been reading a variety of books. All of the book had great plots, character, and settings. But only a few of the books were considered my favorites. So here are the top books I have read in the year of 2013.

One of the books that I really enjoyed reading in 2013, is titled “And Then there were none,” written by Agatha Christie. The book is about a group of people who have been invited to stay at a mysterious Ulick Norman Owen. He claims to be an old friend to all of them. But that appearance had disappeared when the guest are murdered one by one, which causes them to become suspicious of one another of being the murderer. The reason I like this book is because it has many of the things I look in a book. It has suspense, mystery, and character that feel like actual people. In fact it is the best mystery book I have ever read in life.

Another book that I really liked reading was written by the author named, David Pelzer. The book he wrote was titled “The Lost Boy,” which is the expansion to his memoir “The Child Called It.” I had also read that book as well. “The Lost Boy,” continues to tell reader about the earlier moments of David Pelzer’s life. During the book David is put into foster care because of the harsh treatment he was put through while he was living with his mother and siblings. He talks about the people, and the places he went to when went through the process of becoming a foster kid. Which all lead to the moment where is adopted. But in the end he still misses his family, which causes encounters between them over time. The love this book because David Pelzer really tells his story well. Not only did he continue from the previous memoir perfectly, also made me see his point of view.

The final book I would like to mention, is a book I have recently read. The author’s name is Sydney Lumet. His book titled “Making movies,” explains the process directing film. Readers will see his personal view and opinion on how he directs films himself. From meeting the actors to choosing the right camera and etc. He even talks about what he does not like about making films, he doesn’t say he likes everything. I like the fact he explains every detail.

In conclusion I read a lot of great books in the year of 2013, and some of them can take the place of being some of the most extraordinary literature I ever laid my eyes on. Why. It is because they are interesting, entertaining, and they make me think about the issues and characters they introduce. I hope that  the book I read later on in my life are as captivating.

The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak has Liesel Meminger as the main character. She is anine year old girl who is forced into foster because her mother was not able to take care of her and her brother.
But before being able to reach their destination,  while riding the train Lisel's brother was discovered to be dead. After quickly having small funeral for him they arrived at the residents of Liesel's new parent guardians, Mr. and Mrs. Hubermann. In the book Liesel has a wide variety of reactions to the setting of parts in the book and also often the settings symbolize things shown in the book.


For example Liesel basically breaks down when she sees her brother buried underground. The fact of never being able to see him again hits her hard and it is so difficult for to comprehend what is going on, she begins to dig for his body. In this part in the book, it is snowing and cold outside. I believe it symbolizes the emotion of Liesel, her brain frozen she can't think. Only acton her emotions...
Later in the book after 5 years of being adopted she still misses her mother and attempts to write letters to her, but her conflict, is her mother is not responding back. In this part of the she is in the basement, which can be dark at times. At this time she is growing weary to the hopelessness of her attempts and go into a internal dark setting much like the basement.

Setting is a key part to a character's reaction or emotions because it set a mood in them. Whether it involves weather or the lightness of a room or etc. They all have a part in creating setting not only in the location of the character but also the internal setting of the character.

I noticed in there are a lot of injustice in the world make life difficult for others.This can apply to many groups of people,families,worker and countries. Even the whole world itself. But with this injustice I also seen greatness at it's best, I have seen people do things that I would not not do if I were put in the same position. There a are a lot of these occurrences and I cannot name them all, here are some that I witnessed first hand.

I was reading my library book when I notice a example of injustice. A protagonist name Luffy. Had to confront a pirate dictator named Arlong, who had taken a village away from it's people. But before the people were afraid of Arlong who was so powerful no one was brave enough to show objection to his arbitrary law.It wrong for him to take something that was not is, especially when it is owned by multiple people. Dictation take away the land of people, but also the right own by the people there as well.

I attend a Junior Scholars Program,where members showed a video about the Children's March . And decided to read a article on this event afterwards. The events in this the article took place in 1963 Birmingham,Alabama, this was when Martin Luther King Jr was attempting to march on city hall but was arrested. Later he was release and had the idea of filling up the jails to show unity was willing to let anyone help. But he did not expect was came next, only the children there volunteered. He told them should not experience that. But  they created D-day were they would continue King's plan but only children. I was amazing how the kids would stand up for the adults when in the regular situation requires adults to protect. It showed how kids would do something so great.

 In conclusion there can be many unjust things in the world and they may make our situations rough and seem very impossible for us to control on our own. But we will always the very common miracles that inspire regular people to follow their example and face that injustice for not only for their sake but for the sake others. Whether for their close friend,family member, or stranger.

Non fiction reading response

 In the article "Yes, teen fiction can be dark - but it shows teenagers they aren't alone," The author, Maureen Johnson discusses how she feel about Meghan cox Gurdon's "Darkness too visible," article. At first she talk about her first thoughts about what Meghan had written and he makes it clear he against Meghan's perspective on YA Lit. He wrote" The idea that "darkness" doesn't belong in stories makes me wonder if the author of this article has ever read any Poe, Dickens, Shakespeare..." This part made think Maureen thought Meghan was not familiar with young adult authors such as these.This eventually lead to how he thinks Meghan's Definitions of "dark," does not really fit with what she claims. She also discusses why young adult literature issues that seem dark are the books, in the article she says that these issue not included to corrupt or cause harm to others, but they simply there to educate. I saw how Mareen Johnson was showing that YA lit. is for helping youth understand these issues are real.

Mareen Johnson had use some craft moves in her article to show his thoughts.For example use a humorous simile that showed her opinion and some personality at the same. Here is what she wrote,The term covers all genres. Cox Gurdon might as well be saying:"All food is Italian food, and I don't like Italian food, so it should not exist. The fact that it does exist means the food industry is forcing it on my children!" Nearing the end of the article she wrote a short story about how she suggested  writing about the affects of young adult literature on them. Within hours of his post on twitter he had gained over 15,000 reponses. But there was one more craft move that I noticed. It was when he wrote directly Meghan as if she was actually talking to her.

I agree with the author because Meghan doesn't really understand young adult literature or it's purpose. Where as Mareen knows that young adult literature is meant to teach youth that these situations in their are books real and are like guides to handling these things.
I Personally think that the best part of the article was when the author had wrote: So, to Meghan Cox Gurdon – those books you and those like you are so glibly dismissing … maybe you don't like it. That's fine. But that may be a book that changes or even saves someone's life. My first thought was this just left something for Meghan to think about.

Free? written by multiple authors is a book about stories involving human right. One character name Ryan, taught me that being aware can not helped you but it may also make a diffrence in ways you wouldn't expect. This character showed how, when  people make a change in the lives of others.
